Doctor of Medicine in Geriatrics or MD Geriatrics is a three-year post-graduation course. Geriatrics or Geriatric medicine is a speciality that focuses on the health care of elderly people. The curriculum includes expertise in the ageing process, the impact of ageing on illness patterns, drug therapy in seniors, health maintenance, and rehabilitation.
The duration of this postgraduate it focuses on the study of various concepts related to the field of diagnosis, and treatment of various diseases in older adults. It enables the pursuer to acquire in-depth knowledge and hands-on training on a variety of subjects including Anatomy, Radiotherapy, General Medicine, etc. It helps in the accurate diagnosis and treatment planning of diseases.
They are trained in the unique health needs of the elderly, including chronic diseases, nutritional problems, skin ailments, cognitive loss, memory impairment, adverse effects of medications, and immobility and balance issues. The main focus is on managing oncologist emergencies, examining patients, and managing patients in OPD & indoors.

Eligibility Criteria for MD Geriatrics
1. Candidate must have completed MBBS degree or provisional MBBS pass certificate which is recognized as per the provisions of the NMC Act, 2019 and the repealed Indian Medical Council Act 1956.
2. Candidate should also possess a permanent or provisional registration certificate of MBBS qualification issued by the NMC/ the erstwhile Medical Council of India or State Medical Council.
3. Candidates must have completed one year of internship or are likely to complete the internship on or before 31st May 2022.
4. In order to become eligible for counselling, the candidate must have obtained a minimum 50 percentile for the General category (40 percentile for SC/ST/OBC (including PWD of SC/ST/OBC) and 45 percentile for UR PWD) in NEET PG.
Admission Process
1. Applicant on relevant entrance examinations determines admission to various universities and colleges.
2. Some private colleges and deemed universities perform their counselling process by conducting their university-level entrance exams.
3. Candidates who qualify for the test are called for an interview before the final seat allotment.
Career after MD Geriatrics
After the completion of MD, they may begin working in different Government hospitals as well as private hospitals and nursing homes. The main focus is on managing oncologic emergencies, examining patients, and managing patients in OPD & indoors. Those who take an interest in teaching can join medical colleges as lecturers and thesis guides.
During PG training, your main aim is to learn basics including 2D & 3D planning, physics, radiobiology and patient management. An MD doctor can earn more if he starts a private practice. However, the working area or the location is also a determinant factor in this regard. On average, an MD doctor earns Rs 20 lakhs per annum in a government hospital and Rs. 6 lakhs - Rs 10 lakhs in private hospitals.
